New Years and New Beginnings

By: Jason Tran

As the saying goes, with the new year comes new beginnings. Though 2018 has been filled with joy, laughter, and enjoyable moments, it also came with stress, depression, and difficulties. Memories of last year varies from me obtaining my Eagle Scout to mental breakdowns while finishing college applications. Despite last year, I can’t wait for 2019 because of the rush that will come with college acceptance letters, the excitement of the fantastic movies and TV shows to come, and the development of new friendships.

High school has been a fantastic experience for me. Sure, I have certain regrets during my previous four years (some of which include my performance at school and activities that I didn’t participate in); however, I’m super glad that the never-ending pressure has come to a near end. I am looking forward to college acceptance letters because I want to see the options that are open to me. The letters to most students, also, have tremendous meaning since it acts as one of the greatest reward high school students could receive for their hours of tireless and burdensome workload.

For me, these admittance letters are more than just a simple road. They represent a new journey, a new path, a new lifestyle. Over the years, one of the things that I have regret the most was my work ethic. I slacked off a tremendous amount over the course of the four years and if I could go back, that would be the first thing I would change. Though, I am not too pleased about my work ethic the letters will act as a symbol and realization not me what I am capable of it I pushed beyond the boundaries.

This brings me to one of my most crucial reasons why I am looking forward to 2019. People often say that with the New Year comes new beginnings, and to me, it’s exactly that. Over the course of the past few days, I realized that school and life is more than just receiving perfect grades on your transcripts. Rather, the most crucial part of school is your learning experience and the effort that that you put forth in overcoming unexpected obstacles. To me, 2019 will mark the change of the lifestyle and value that I will try to live by. The resolution will be difficult to abide by but will yield great rewards.

Another reason why I look forward to the New Year is because of the many anticipated movies and TV series. Some of the movies I’m looking forward to the most are Frozen 2, Avengers 4, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, John Wick 3, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and more. The ones that I am most eager about on this list are Frozen 2, Avengers 4, and Captain Marvel. Though I am a huge fan of the others, I am an even bigger Marvel and Frozen fan. I am looking forward to Avengers 4, because I am excited about how they are planning to end Infinity War. Captain Marvel is on the list since she is one of my favorite superheros in the Marvel Character Universe. You may be wondering why I listed Frozen 2 over Toy Story 4. Well, I chose Frozen 2 since Else is one of my two favorite characters (plus, what can be better than a movie focusing on Olaf, the cute and hilarious snowman?) There are two TV series that I am extremely excited that are making their series debut in 2019: season 3 of Westworld and season 9 of Game of Thrones (GOT). I am a huge fan of these shows. Westworld has an extremely interesting and unique take to it, and I am excited about what they are planning to do with it because of the way they left off season 2. Game of Thrones has been one of my favorite TV series ever since season. Though inappropriate, it has an amazing plot and has tons of action packed scenes. In fact, many argue that GOT is the best TV series ever made. It isn’t surprising why people would make such bold claims after watch the previous 8 season. One of the most exciting parts of season 9 is the fact that it is the final reason to the epic series. I can’t wait to see where they take the plot.

New years always mark new friendships for me. Every year, I make countless amount of friends whether if it is online or in real life. Well, where do I make friends online and why do I become their friend? If you know me, the obvious answer is through (an online streaming service owned by Amazon) and I become friends with them to play online games and share memorable experiences of reaching higher ranks. I know that you may be thinking to yourself, wait, what? Your make friends to play video games? You won’t every meet them so can you even consider them your friend? Well, the answer is yes. In fact, one of my best friends was someone I met through my old days as a CSGO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) player. For me, online friends have served as better friends in real life. They are always there for me when I need something and they are more mature. In fact, they have helped me through the most difficult times of my high school experience. My friends at school are supportive of me, but friends I have online friends who understand where I am coming from and are more open about their views. It may seem weird, but I am actually more willing to share my personal life with online friends than those at school. I am excited for the New Year because of the memories that I will continue to build with my online friend group and the people that I will meet who joins out community.

So for me, I can’t be sure of 2019, since the new year comes with never-ending excitement ranging from college letter acceptances to a change in lifestyle and values to the exciting shows and movies that are yet to come and lastly the new friends and memories that I will build in the upcoming year.
